Launched in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level domain name extension is the single TLD meant for personal web pages only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other designations people are popular by. Initially, only 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to obtain john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered 3rd-level domain names remained running.
